Squat Challenge

 
You may or may not have heard of the 30 Day Squat Challenge.  I didn't until a co-worker told me about it.  It's just like it says, 30 days of squats.  On the 30th day, apparently, you should see and feel a difference in your upper legs and rear.
 
I'm on day 3.  Did I start with 50?  No.  I would be in a wheelchair if I tried to do 50 on the 1st day.  I started with 20 on day 1.  25 on day 2 with not much problem. On day 3 I tried to do 30 and couldn't do more than a few.  I seriously tried but can't.
 
I'm being realistic in the sense that I am out of shape.  However, I am going to continue this challenge as best as I can.  There are 5 or 6 of my co-workers that are also doing it.
 

I like it because it's easy and doesn't take much time and doesn't require equipment.  So I'm going to do the best that I can and advance as quickly as I can.  Wish me luck!

My Fauna

One thing I always wanted was a nice house with a huge yard that I could landscape with flowers and bushes that attracted birds and butterflies that I could sit and watch.  Ya, well, I'm not there yet.  I do however live in a townhouse with a small yard that I can put a few things up to attract some fauna.
 
I put my hummingbird feeder up a little early (I usually put it up in June) and was surprised with visitors sooner than I thought.  I get ruby throats only as far as I can tell, and I see about 4 or 5 females and only 1 male during the summer.  (There may be more than 1 male but I never see more than 1 at a time)
 
This was taken a couple days ago.  I've already seen 3 females at a time fighting over the feeder.  For such small sweet little birds I didn't realize they could be so territorial.  What's awesome about them is they don't mind me standing right next to the feeder.  They will still come up with me standing about 2 feet away.  I'm still working on getting them to land on my finger.
 

I also have a dish with bird food.  I get a few different types of birds.  Here's a mourning dove and a female cardinal.  And yes, that's Cat watching.  She sits at the back door and does this sort of chirping chatter.  Not chirping like a bird but more like a cricket.  It's very hard to explain, I might have to try to get her doing it on camera.


Here's a red winged blackbird.  We had them in Florida all over, but this is the 1st one I've seen in the 10+ years I've been living here.


Here's another dove and the male cardinal.  There's a lot of doves.  During winter I probably saw at least a dozen at a time.  And boy do they fight.  And they're messy!  They use their beaks to throw the seed all over the place to find what they want.  Very unruly...


This is Fred and Ethel, my house finches.  They have their nest on a ledge on my front porch.  Looking forward to following their offspring this year.  I'm going to try to get some pictures this year when the chicks hatch.


And last but not least, Bubba the green anole.  He likes to perch himself on the dead peach tree and survey his kingdom.  Every now and then he and Calli like to face off.  Yes, you read that right, face off.  Twice now I've left Calli outside for a bit and came around to see her in a play bow woofing and growling like she's playing with another dog.  Well it was Bubba holding his own and even charging Calli.  I would have gotten my camera but I'm not sure if Calli was going to realize she was being bullied by a 4oz reptile.  So I went out, scooped Bubba up and put him in his tree.  Surprisingly he doesn't struggle.  He just kind of looks at me and cocks his head as if saying - I was handling that, you know.

Matzo Pizza

I don't know why I never thought of this.  I love pizza.  It would be my last meal for whatever reason I was given a last meal.  I will eat any type of pizza.  I prefer thin crust though.  Less dough equals the ability to eat more.  The sauce and cheese and toppings are the star.  The crust is just a vehicle to carry those toppings to your mouth.

Now that you've heard my philosophy on pizza, on to the tastiness.  Here is the source.  All you need-

Matzo crackers
Sauce
Cheese
Toppings - turkey pepperoni for me


Throw it in the toaster oven on broil for a few minutes.
 


Perfect.  Just starting to brown and get bubbly.

Yummy Protein Bites

So I've been looking for a granola type recipe that I can make easily.  I've tried 3 or 4 baked and not baked.  I've bypassed this one a few times because I thought, this can't be good.  It's just dates and nuts and seeds and chocolate.  Boy was I wrong.  These are great.  The original poster made them into bars but I found the mix too thick and sticky to do it that way, so I rolled them into balls.  You can find the original recipe here. 
 
 
The only thing I did different was add chia seeds.

 Ingredients
 
Mixed and rolled
 
The hands - very sticky mix but easy to wash off.

These are awesome.  I plan on making more versions with a date base and other nuts and seeds.  I'll also add oats and bran in the future. They have also stayed in an airtight container in the fridge for more than a week. Enjoy!

Sweet Potato Dog Snacks


 

In a previous post I mentioned I needed to find a way to make sweet potato snacks for my dog.  Well, I found it here.  They take the day because they need to dry out in the oven but that requires little work other than slicing the potatos.

Calli approved.  I'll definitly be making these often.  This was only 2 potatos.  Next time I'm going to raise the temp to 200 and try to cut the drying time so I can make more since it took almost 8 hours at 175.

Sausage and Veggies

I've seen a few recipes similar to this floating around Pinterest so I thought I'd give it a go.  I just took ideas from what I saw and did my own thing.
 

Veggies of your choice.  I used carrots, onion, baby potatoes, green beans and zucchini.  Coated lightly with olive oil then seasoned with a few cloves of garlic, pepper, chipotle and smoked paprika.  Later I added a packet of sodium free beef bullion powder to boost the flavor, so it's not included in the picture.  Your choice of sausage.  I used smoked turkey sausage.  



Roasted the veggies along with all the seasoning.

 
Browned my sausage, or should I say burnt.  I got distracted during this process by my Mom calling but no biggie, tasted fine.
 

Then combine.  This is really tasty.  There's so many combos you can do with this as far as ingredients and seasoning.  I didn't post a solid recipe because I eyeballed everything.  I rarely measure anything unless I'm baking.  I would like to do one with just sausage and potatoes and maybe seasoned with ranch dip powder.  Don't know how ranch would go with smoked sausage but that's the beauty of cooking.  Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.


So experiment with this idea, so many combos you could try.
